One of the forums I'm most active on, and a moderator of, has 3,298 members to date. Not too shabby for a forum dedicated to Assembly Language programming (a subject many people consider dead). Our moderators team is made up of several people; of which come from Georgia (Eastern US), California (Western US), Australia, Singapore, Denmark, and Switzerland. (as well as places in between and repeates of the same locations). On that forum we delete a multitude of spam messages every day, but until I became moderator and took over my timezone, I never saw a single one. Btw, what's a "Gas Head"?

A Gas Head is a local slang term in Bristol for a supporter of Bristol Rovers, one of the local football teams (real football that is not American football  :lmao:). The supporters of the other team, Bristol City, are referred to as Shit Heads. I'm actually Mancunian (means I'm from Manchester) and only moved here four(ish) years ago to move in with my better half.

Right enough about me.

Forums are tricky beasts. Sometimes they can be busy as hell and other times deader than a Dodo. As well as my own two forums I am admin on another two. This particular forum had it's peak years ago but it pretty dead now to the point I was thinking of killing it but decided to change scripts instead to see if that helped. The Lazarus forum has it's moments but it's mostly there for support and Lazarus is so damn good it hardly needs any ;). The YahELite forum used to be extremely busy but has died just recently.

Oh yes forum scripts and spam. phpBB is notorious for attracting spam which is one reason I moved away from it. This particular script is quite nice and has CAPTCHA (image verification) on guest posts. If you want a really powerful forum try SMF with it's ease of use and plethora of add ons. If you just want to play with some visit www.opensourcecms.com where they have many different scripts you can play with and actually log in as admin to see the controls.

Yea, SMF has my vote. All the forums I moderate (except the Windows Programming Forum ran by Manos) uses SMF. The forum I was talking about above, located at http://www.asmcommunity.net/ , is having a similiar problem about being out of postings.. There are less and less posts being made, but this is sort of a good thing. It's because after being around so long, the forum has answered pretty much every question regarding Win32 Assembly programming and most users can go months without ever posting a question, just using the search function. We are actually waiting for the release of Vista to see what new questions it brings to the table, and what major changes to the internal system warrents more articles in the x86-book.

I personally don't think you should take this forum offline. It may have been dead for a while by your standards, but it's one of the few places I can go to and actually talk, rather than answering questions and/or correcting people. I think the primary decline in userbase might be because of the "death of yahoo" as many people who attended this place did so because of it being a really good resource for Yahoo related questions. And with Yahoo's persistant refusal to do something about the chat-room annoyances, many people are leaving Yahoo for other alternatives. Instead of ditching the forum all together, why not look to expand into new territories. You're a clever guy mate, you'll figure something out.
