sure did, the second post was a mistake i made sending the first one.
sorry and thank you for your help.

one question:
I implemented your Simple Anti Spam Modification for 2.2 and 2.3.1 and after a while as you put it "spammers got wise" and found a way around the mod.
Now (with your kind help) I have installed the Simple Human Verification Question. Is the latter method more secure or could a spambot spy out the verification word and then submit it itself?

Thanks for your help and your apparently infinite patience.

they got round the simpla anti spam by making their script/program visit the add entry page first and get the names of the inputs. A bot wil be unable to get the answer for the human verification due to the fact that the question can be anything and in any format. I don't even use a question I just say type this into the box below.

First of all I have to concratulate you to your great site and thank you for all the support.. I've got the following problem:

spam protection regarding the "normal" entries works fine but the comment fields always get spammed.. i read somethiny about password protection (like you use it in your guestbook) but I can't find a tutorial for it.. could you please tell me where to find it or how to solve this problem..
Thanks

I screwed up something bad and made it wose by trying to correct it.

Where can I find the original codes to:

templates/form.php

addentry.php

lib/add.class.php

lang/english.php

If I can get those (I'll keep a copy like I should have) and try again.. for some reason the snapshot did not indicate a change..

suddenly out of nowhere my guestbook was inundated!  i was ready to drop it completely today. one last google brought me here and hopefully a solution to the problem. the mods are in place and seem to be working.  nice job! O-))

for your information, i'm using advanced guestbook v2.3.1 pretty much out of the box. it took me a while to figure out a couple of things:

the addentry.php doesn't show up in the cpanel templates screen because it's not in the templates directory, i found it in the main guestbook directory.

the editor in cpanel is close to worthless. i ended up bringing them down via ftp, editing them in notepad and uploading again.

some files were CRLF delimited, others were just LF delimited, go figure. i went ahead and made the mods anyway, finishing up with two files that were both CRLF and LF!!  seems to work ok though O-)

the nice thing about this approach is it's simple to change the verification question and you can make it more complex than a simple word. for example: "type in the sum of two plus two in words".

cheers!

Don't worry. Most of my scripts end up as a mix of both dos and unix line endings. I use PSPad to edit the files on the server via FTP.

You really should update your guestbook to either 2.3.4 or Lazarus as there are some exploits in2.3.1.
