Do you think this software will survive?

What would be your next choice of forum software?

I did notice the story over on the SMF forums but there was little background I could find as to what the problem was. From the posts of a lot of users few people seem to know what is going on apart from an internal restructuring. Wonder what [Unknown], the guy who originally converted YABB to PHP, thinks of it all.

If they do go to pieces I'll probably carry on using this version until an exploit I can't fix arises. At that point I will probably look at www.opensourcecms.com to see what alternatives there are. Originally I used Phorum but decided it was to basic.  I used UNB on my old site forum. It looks good but again is only basic. I used phpBB for years but the fact you have to manually mod it and then manually update or remod after each update puts me off along with how confusing and spread out it's admin is. I also cannot believe that phpBB 3 still does not employ AJAX. esoTalk has some nice features but, again, is a little basic and I don't feel it is suited for my needs. So who knows. There is always MyBB but some of it's bugs seriously put me off.

Found a couple of ongoing discussions which I have been following:
http://www.lewisonline.ca/?p=426

Also SMF friends has a few discussions going on
http://www.smf-friends.org/index.php

I have been playing with phpBB3 on a local install.
They have automod RC3 which works most of the time but can throw errors depending on mod, if your using custom themes then thats more work. Your right about the admin panel its overwhelming for the likes of myself.

Im not happy with this software, it seems a lot of hard work and I could see forums being down for maintenance on a regular basis.

If I was'nt skint I would try Invision power board or at least pay for their hosting package, but thats just more money that is not available.

MyBB works for me out the box and mods very easy, I just find it boring.

A quick play on OpenSourceCMS and I'd say that AEF looks pretty good. XMB and Ice clos ebehind but still nothing compares to SMF.

Well they just released SMF 2 RC3 so things can't be that bad.

It would be nice if it settles down again.

Phoenix seems like a while away, all you do is wait on updates and new versions no matter what you use  ;D

So a few ex SMF staff working on a new project then. As you say can't see it being out soon.
